#shoplocal Day 7, Fabutan Studios

Here comes winter.  Shorter days, colder weather, less sun.  Anyone that knows me knows I absolutely love the sun. I am a summer baby and I get out there whenever I can.  Lake days, boat rides, a nice golden tan.  Too bad I live in Canada where I only get to enjoy that three months of the year.

For the remainder of the year when the sun is low, I just stop by a Fabutan.  My friends are three-studio franchisees and they’ve helped me get my fix of vitamin D for over 8 years now.  Rod is behind the scenes and Dawn is the front line helping customers.  If you’ve ever met her, you know she’s a ray of sunshine herself; it’s perfectly fitting that her name is Dawn.

I’m going to do my best to give you a brief lesson on the sun.  It is definitely not my wheelhouse so if there’s any questions or you’d like more information, Dawn is your authority.  Head down to any of her three studios (Sherwood Park, Millwoods or Whitemud Crossing) and she or one of her employees would be happy to fill you in!  Let’s start with the basics, there are three types of rays the sun gives off:

  • UVA – the least damaging of all.  These rays oxidize our cells and turn our skin brown.
  • UVB – these rays are responsible for stimulating Vitamin D production in our bodies but too much exposure to UVB can burn your skin.
  • UVC – the most damaging rays of all.  Outdoors, they are blocked by what’s left of the ozone layer.  Indoors, they are non-existent in Fabutan beds.

Fabutan sunbeds have an increased amount of UVA and a decreased amount of UVB, which is just enough to produce Vitamin D and prepare your skin for the outdoors, and no damaging UVC rays.  According to the Vitamin D Society, Vitamin D receptors (VDR) are located in tissues and organs throughout your body that interact with over 3000 genes and they all play an important role in your body’s function. Fabutan is a big supporter of the Vitamin D Society; their annual Ray of Hope campaign is a win-win for all involved.  With the purchase of any Fabutan service package, you can donate $10 (that is given entirely to the Vitamin D Society to go towards Vitamin D research) they will give you 100 minutes of sunshine, 2 weeks of Redlight therapy or 1 Mystic spray tan to keep for yourself or put on a gift card for someone for Christmas!

Fabutan isn’t just about indoor suntanning either.  They offer Mystic spray tans, Redlight skin therapy and they’ve also expanded into the market of eyelash extensions with Hush lashes which will be offered at Dawn’s Whitemud Crossing location very soon!

  • Sherwood Park – #89, 993 Fir Street (just north of Wye Road), 780-467-6484 – sun beds, Redlight therapy and Mystic spray tan.
  • Edmonton Millwoods – 2829 Millwoods Road NW, 780-462-1814 – sun beds, Redlight therapy and Mystic spray tan
  • Edmonton Whitemud Crossing – #178, 4211 106 Street, 780-438-6043 – sun beds, Redlight therapy, Mystic spray tan and Hush lash extensions

RedlightIf you’re unsure about what Redlight therapy does, it’s also known as UV-free light therapy.  It naturally stimulates collagen production in the skin which is proven to improve skin tone and texture, reduce fine lines and wrinkles and decrease acne.  It can also help with skin disorders such as eczema.  This picture details a Redlight therapy customer from start to finish over a 5 month treatment process.  Pretty amazing results!

As I get older, I’ve payed a lot more attention to my body and know when it’s not summer and I’m not outside enjoying the sun, I become vitamin D deficient.  I can get more irritable, feel pain in my joints and bones, become fatigued or tired more easily and even slightly depressed.  Seasonal Affected Disorder (also known as SAD) is something Dawn sees a lot of people for as well.  If you have any of these symptoms, the fix might be as easy as getting some more vitamin D in your system.

For more information on the Fabutan group of companies, visit their Facebook page or their website.  For one-on-one treatment or to purchase a Christmas package for someone on your list, stop by one of Dawn and Rod’s studios today and let them help you or your loved ones experience the results for yourself.

A NOTE TO MY READERS: I want to reiterate that every one of these shops and artists have been selected by me to participate in my #shoplocal campaign.  I am receiving NO GRATUITIES OR FREEBIES for these shout outs and want to keep it that way!  I love all these places and what they offer and am sharing them to make my readers lives easier and promote local shopping in my area.
